Not All Calories Are Created Equal.

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Calories, do you really understand its meaning, most people still do not know what a calorie is. When asked about its meaning, most people would link it to dieting. There is more to calories than just a word that is linked to weight loss.

Understanding Calories

Ok…here goes… “calorie is a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree at one atmosphere pressure; used by nutritionists to characterize the energy-producing potential in food.” This is how it is defined as per Wikipedia. What they do not tell you is that there are different types of calories.Nor do they mention how they are used by the body.

The main types of calories include: carbohydrates, fats and proteins. All of them burn when used in the body and then turn into heat energy, which is generally called calories.

Each type of calorie varies in terms of chemical and physical properties. They can be found in various kinds of food, whether alone, in combination or even all of them. Here are the essential things that you need to know about each calorie type.

The Fear Of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the most common type of calorie. It is found on foods that are rich on starch and sugar. Most of them are from plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, and grains. Most legumes, such as lentils, beans, and peas, are also rich with carbs. However, dairy products would be the only foods that come from animals which have a lot of carb content. (Kills the idea that milk and cookies is “kinda good for you” don’t it.)

Typically carbohydrates can be classified into two subdivisions: simple and complex.

Simple carbs are normally sugars, such as glucose and fructose, which come from fruits and vegetables. Another type would be lactose, which comes from milk. Last would be sucrose, which comes from cane sugar. (Rule of thumb is any thing that ends in “ose” is a type of sugar.)

Sugar that is for everyday use is pure sucrose. Most of the simple carbs that you eat are sugars are mixed with processed foods such as cookies, sodas etc. These add-ons are the major reason why sugar accounts for 16% to 18% of total calories that are consumed by Americans according to most health surveys.

The complex types are chains of simple carbs, which primarily consist of starches along with fiber, which can be found in all foods that come from plants. However, plants store carbohydrates in the form of starch. Foods that have high complex carbs would include grains and products that come from it like bread and pasta. Additionally, potatoes, beans, corn, and other vegetables are also high in complex carbs.

Shadowed Proteins

Since carbohydrates seem to be the most popular type of calorie, proteins on the other hand seem to be the most over shadowed in comparison with the fame of fats and carbs. However, it is an important kind of calorie that you’ll need to develop body muscle.

Proteins have about 4 kilocalories per gram. Majority of this kind of calorie can not be naturally produced by the human body and must originate from dietary sources. The main sources of protein include: eggs, nuts, meats, legumes, grains, dairy products. (And yes some of these are also those nasty carb carriers.)

Recent studies suggest, men between ages 19 to 70 should consume 56g of protein everyday in order to avoid deficiency. On the other hand, women within the same age range should get at least 46g/day. Those people, who wish to increase muscle mass should consume more protein then the average. (Be sure to consult a doctor if your looking to gain muscle mass. In some cases the increase can become unhealthy if you have any type of heart condition.)

Fats

Fats, would probably be the most unwanted kind of calorie by many. However, it still plays an important role in the normal function of the body. The body cannot absorb Vitamins A, E, D and K if not for it. They play an important role in the maintenance of healthy hair and skin. Protection is another function, since they protect various organs from shock.

Animals and plants both contain types of fats. Types of animal fats would include lard, butter and fish oil, while plant fats would include soy beans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, olives, coconuts, sesames, and vegetable and seed oils.

Kettlebells are a great way to achieve over all fitness. This 200 year old russian method of fitness can whip anyone in to shape..no matter what your age.

Berry Fights Cancer According to Study

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
by Dr. Jerimiah Crossderd

In a first to investigate the acai berry, the University of Florida found in a recent study that the fruit contained enough antioxidants to destroy human cancer cells.

The results showed that the acai berry destroyed leukemia cells 86 percent of the time where it triggered a self-destruct response according to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry where the information was initially published.

A abundant source of antioxidants which fight and prevent harmful acai from entering the body can be found in the acai berry. This research has strengthened the hypothesis that adding an acai berry extract can be very beneficial to the human body.

The study also noted that it is not intended to show that leukemic can be cured in humans with the the acai berry elements.

The results were never intended to raise any false hope of a cure for leukemia as the trials were performed under the cell-culture model. The findings still are very promising. Cases have shown that compounds that prove well in a cell-culture model have also done well when tested on humans.

Other fruits have proven similar results in killing cancer cells like mangoes, grapes and guavas. Scientist are still unsure what role antioxidants play in fighting cancer cells as there are other factors that come into play as well.

Acai berry must be consumed shortly after they are picked which is why so little is known about them. The process of being able to maintain the valuable qualities is so new that very little research has ever been done on this fruit.

The Euterpe oleracea is the palm tree that produces the acai berry, and are commonly found along the flood plains of the amazon river. The color of the berry is a dark purple and the size of a blue berry. There is a large seed that is surrounded by an edible pulp encased in a thin layer.

The indigenous people of the amazon have used the acai berry to treat symptoms ranging from digestive disorders to skin conditions. The acai berry has also been proven recently to help loose weight and gain energy.

by Nathaniel Millsby PHD

The acai fruit berry is one of the worlds most powerfully nutritious foods. Harvested from a special palm tree in the Brazilian rain forest, this purple fruit holds the magic of the Amazon.

Acai fruit is packed full of antioxidants, amino acids, and essential fatty acids. It was classified as the #1 super food by Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a dermatologist who has written several books on weight loss and maintaining a youthful appearance.

The acai fruit has in it the following:

Enough antioxidant concentration to help fight premature aging and more than 10 times more than red grapes and 30 times more than red wine.

A nearly perfect vital amino acid complex combined with important trace minerals, both critical to proper muscle contraction and regeneration

The perfect blend of healthy fats, fiber for your diet, and nutrients that help lower cholesterol help promote that digestive system

Scientists have long know that antioxidants are essential for a balanced diet. These are the substances that protect the cells against the destructive effects of free radicals

Free radicals are harmful substances that the body produces when breaking down some foods. They are also created from environmental pollutants such as tobacco smoke or radiation. They can damage cells, and have been linked to cancer, heart disease, and other diseases.

Acai fruit is rich in vitamins A and B and contains as much protein as an egg. This is crucial in fighting off disease.

The only other rich content of healthy fatty acid in the acai fruit can only be found in olive oil. these acids aid in getting into the cells membrane. This is how cells remain supple. By this happening, the neurotransmitters, hormones, and receptors to function at a more efficient level.

The acai fruit berry is a powerful source of nutrients that can give your body everything it needs to function properly. Research, and you will find a variety of acai products that will meet your need.

What Is The Glycemic Index?

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
by James Zane Johnson

Are you ready for a very simple and extremely effective way to lose weight or maintain your healthy figure? If so, then you need to learn about the Glycemic Index and how to use it in your daily life. In short, it is a listing of numbers that tell you how fast your blood sugar level will raise after eating particular foods. The faster it spikes the worse that food is for your weight loss and health efforts.

In the recent past everyone was trying out diets that completely eliminated carbohydrates, but luckily that fad has been replaced with more sensible thinking. Your body needs carbs for energy, but not all carbs will do the job. It’s a matter of selecting your carbs wisely, not cutting them out completely.

The Glycemic Index is the only tool that will help you quickly determine how a food is going to affect your blood sugar. This is not only important for those with diabetes, but it is crucial for anyone looking to lose weight. Thousands of other people have already used this one tool to take off considerable amounts of weight.

Plus, if you start choosing better foods and stick with it for the rest of your life, this will be the last time you ever have to lose weight!

First, let’s get a clear understanding of what the Glycemic Index is. It deals exclusively with carbohydrates, so you will not find meats or other exclusive protein sources on the list. Carbohydrates range from vegetables and fruits to all varieties of grains, cookies, cake, and other sweets that use flour.

If you wrote down everything you typically eat in a day you might be blown away by how much of it is a carbohydrate. Obviously, cutting all of it out completely is near impossible. That is why no carb diets always lead to failure.

All carbs have sugar, both naturally or added in during processing for the market. The issue is what else is present with that sugar and how your body will break it down into energy.

When you eat whole grain bread, pasta, rice, or non-starchy vegetables and fruits, your body has to separate the fiber from the sugar. This takes time and will burn of calories as the sugar is slowly separated and released into your blood stream over time. It creates a long term source of energy.

Refined white bread, pasta, rice, and sweets with lots of added sugar are quite different. Since the natural fiber has already been stripped out for you, the sugar simply rushes directly into your blood stream at once. You will get a sudden rush of energy but it quickly leads to a drop in blood sugar. What comes next? You start craving more food, especially refined carbs which will give another big spike of energy.

Obviously, craving more food is not good for weight loss or a trim figure. It also is not good for your energy levels when your sugar drops so drastically.

If you choose wisely and eat mainly from lower Glycemic Index foods, you will maintain an even, consistent blood sugar level and avoid those cravings. Your body will also receive more of the nutrients it needs from the natural fiber.

3 Secrets To Healthy Eating – Shape Up Sensibly

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009
by James Zane Johnson

Healthy eating is not as difficult or as restrictive as most people think. In fact, if you think it means strict deprivation you are not doing it correctly! If you want to lose weight or just decrease your chances of developing diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and all of the other health conditions linked to obesity, then learning to think more sensibly about food is important.

The most important secret you will ever discover is that it all starts in the head. If you put too many restrictions on your diet or tell yourself that you can never eat foods that you love again, then you are going to fail. The first rule is never to do that to yourself!

Consider the following secrets to help you form a more realistic way of thinking about a healthy diet.

Mind Game: This is the most important secret you will ever hear, so it must come at the top of the list. How you think about your new eating habits will determine whether you really make them stick in your life or ditch them for everything forbidden. It really is a mind game of sorts.

For starters, you are not going on a diet. You are just making better decisions. Better eating choices will bring about the healthier body that you desire but it is not about giving up the cookies or depriving yourself of everything you love.

Proper Carbs: This is the only secret you need to know that is related to an actual food group. You could read books on how to create a perfectly balanced diet and all the specific nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that your body needs and the exact amount to consume every day. But who has time to do that?

If you can focus on replacing unhealthy carbs with healthier varieties, this would be a giant step toward healthy eating.

All of these things are carbohydrates: cake, cookies, refined pasta, whole grain bread, fresh fruit, and vegetables.

The trick here is to start replacing your sugary treats with fresh fruit to get that sweet taste. Replace refined breads and pasta with whole grain varieties. Add in vegetables and fruits to every single meal.

You aren’t looking to eliminate carbs because they are your body’s main source of energy and stamina. You just want to eat healthy carbs that deliver real value to your body.

The Glycemic Index can be used as a guide to determine the healthier carbs.

The final secret is to eat often! If you are not having small snacks throughout the day you will suffer from a slower metabolism and your blood sugar will not remain stable. The trick is to find sensible snacks that give your body a constant source of energy. If you eat unhealthy snacks you will be robbing your body of energy instead.

Do your best to eat something every 3-4 hours, even if it is just fresh fruit or a handful of nuts. Consider those healthy carbs as light snacks.

Healthy eating is really about balancing out your life. You can have those unhealthy foods that you love, but they should not be every day occurrences. Your everyday eating should involve lean protein sources and a variety of healthy carb selections.

Instead of piling on those favorite foods day after day, use them in moderation and savor every single bite.

Selecting A Weight Loss Program

Saturday, June 27th, 2009
by James Zane Johnson

Trying to lose weight is not always the easiest thing to do. You may have tried fad diets, liquid supplements, and even diet pills, yet still you have made very little progress when it comes to losing weight. The next thing that you need to try is a weight loss program.

First of all, never try to lose weight on your own. Although this method can and has worked for some people, the most successful weight loss occurs with a little help from reputable programs that specialize in weight loss.

How well a weight loss program works for you will be dependent on you choosing the one that fits into your needs. You can figure out the right one. You can decide this based on a simple evaluation of your needs.

Reason for losing weight

You will want to consider the reason why you want to lose weight. Some people lose weight for health reasons such as diabetes and high blood pressure. If this is your reason you may want to consider one of the wonderful weight loss programs that will send you nutritionist endorsed prepackaged meals. These programs have a trained nutritional expert that can oversee your meal plan, paying close attention to your nutritional needs. They will make sure that everything is correctly portioned and balanced to suit your health needs. The meals are delicious and you will not have to worry about what you should and should not be eating.

Some people are trying to get healthy and modify their diets to suit their lives. If you are one of those people then you may want to join a weight loss program that will incorporate weekly meetings, diet plans, and exercise to help with your weight loss. Your diet will no longer be just a way to eat, but it will become a way of life. These programs are usually based on a points system.

For those who are looking for a lifestyle changing weight loss there are programs where you weigh at weekly meetings, exercise together, and go over weekly menu plans and food options. The weight loss programs offer a boost to those who want to utilize a group setting to lose weight.

Individuals who are severely overweight will probably require a more diligent weight loss program. There are several boot camps and weight loss camps that can help these people out. They will be put into a setting with others where their diet and exercise will be monitored day and night for several weeks. A few of these programs even last for months. There have been many success stories that have resulted in these programs.

You have to make the choice

The decision to lose weight is inevitably yours. Having people pressure you into losing weight will not work for anyone. If you are dead set on losing weight, the best thing that you can do is begin a weight loss program. They really work.

Some Facts About Resveratrol

Saturday, June 27th, 2009
by James Zane Johnson

Resveratrol is a natural drug that comes from the Japanese knotweed plant and is also found to be in the skins of red grapes. Research has found some very optimistic results in testing that has been done with this drug in regards to diabetes, cancer and other diseases that ail us as we age. Most of the testing to date has been done on mice and rats.

The benefits of Resveratrol have been documented in experiments with mice and rats, but they have yet to undergo the same testing with humans. Resveratrol has also been found in the skin of red grapes and is in red wine as well. The amounts of it in these two things have yet to be confirmed.

Cancer has always been one disease that has testing done with it regarding almost every drug that hits the market. Resveratrol is not an exception to this rule. This test showed that mice that had exposure to skin cancer but had the drug put on them in the topical form did not end up getting the disease. Another way that it was tested regarding cancer is that it was injected into a cancerous area of the mouse. This found results that showed that it stopped the disease from spreading any further, and tumors also stopped growing.

Diabetes is the last disease that I will show some results of the studies that have been done. The study involved rats and were over a 30 day time period. Resveratrol was given to a rat every day for 30 days. This showed results of the rat having normal level of blood sugars than the rats that did not receive the drug. Researchers are holding high hopes on this study and want to see it be done on humans to see what the results would be on them.

Even with all the positive things that have been found with Resveratrol there are also some negative things that have been brought to light as well. There are some that think that it may promote the growth of breast cancer cells in humans.

But then you get the flip side of the coin, and people saying what a great fighter it is in prevention of the disease. People are people, and not all of us think alike. Unfortunately, this can make the way others see things far more difficult.

There are a few other tidbits of information about Resveratrol that we can note. Red wine and the effects that it has in the prevention of cardiovascular issues has been found to contain Resveratrol. Maybe this is why it has been thought to be such a good thing all of these years, this would make one wonder.

All this information will help people become more aware about the drug Resveratrol. Studies are still being done on it now and will probably continue for quite some time. Remember that everything that we put into our bodies does have some risks associated with them, no matter what they are. Keep yourself informed and learn all you can before making a decision on such things.

Studies that have been done with animals show that Resveratrol can help to increase the lifespan that the animals had. Not only that, but it also was found to counteract the adverse effects that high fat diets had on them as well. Mice that were tested for high fat diets and taking Resveratrol were almost 1/3 less likely to die as opposed to the mice that did not take Resveratrol but ate high fat diets.

When it comes to the benefits from this natural drug in regards to cancer, there have been some studies regarding it as well. A form of Resveratrol that was applied topically to mice that had been exposed to skin cancer did not develop the disease. Also in another study it was found that when it was injected into the site of cancer it prevented the cancer from metastasizing further. Tumors were also seen to stop the growth rate that they previously had before the Resveratrol was injected into them.

There have also been studies that prove that Resveratrol has cancer prevention benefits as well. A topical form of the substance had been applied to mice and showed that it prevented skin cancer from developing from the mice that had carcinogenic exposure. It has also been found that when injected into the lungs of mice afflicted with certain forms of cancer that it slowed the process of metastasis as well as the growth of the tumours.

No matter what the drug is that is new, there are always people out there stating the bad effects that they have. This is something that people need to remember is common in all drugs that are taken. One ill effect that people are in a huff about is that there is speculation that it may provoke the growth in breast cancer cells.

Can Adjusting Your Attitude Help You lose Weight ?

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009
by Debbie Vera

There is a standard equation for dropping off weight: use more calories than you eat. One of the easiest ways to do that, it is sometimes considered, is simply to eat less at least of particular foods and/or exercise more. And, it’s true, that is fundamentally what all diets amount to. But how to do that to achieve natural weight loss demands a little more. In particular, it oftentimes requires a change in attitude.

Attitude only won’t change the rate at which your body burns calories, nor will it magically make you to eat less or exercise more. But keeping a weight loss program over the long run requisite to achieve enduring effects can only be done by (in part) a switch of attitude.

What exactly is attitude? What’s actually meant by that ?

‘Attitude’ is used here to sum up all those views about what to eat and whether to exercise, and how. Some, even those who desire a more natural weight loss program, simply go on doing more or less the same things day in and day out. But no change in behavior will lead in no change in effect. To change behaviour, it’s necessary to align the attitude.

How do I do that?

That’s the 64 thousand dollar question and the answer, it will come as no surprise, will vary from person to person.

Some people will reach a crisis point in their lives. They are tired of looking in the mirror and finding a body image they disdain. Or, they are tired of feeling tired all the time. They are strongly motivated at the outset to adjust eating habits, switch their diet and commit to a healthy exercise program.

Others have to dig a little deeper, to find the inner force to change, to look farther down the road. Beginning a diet ‘after the holidays’ or ‘after changing jobs’ or any of the thousand other reasons we devise to start later means one thing: not starting now. But now is the time to start, if you want to start reaching results now. That means changing attitude now.

Easier said, than done, it goes without saying. But not so very hard if you look to any of the many usable sources for helping you. Friends who have successfully started or gone a long way on a natural weight loss program can be an inspiration. Let the good pull of their success move you, more than the negative guilt of where you are today.

Read about the large variety of diets available. No one of them is ideal for every individual. Finding one that fits your natural tendency will help get you started. Some people find it easy to commit to tracking calories. Others only wish to focus on healthy foods, but keep portions limited. Still others need to follow a diet that has been successfully utilized by those they know or trust. Anyone will wish a natural weight loss program that optimizes their universal health. Here, the only correct answer to ‘Which is best?’ is the one that gets you started and gets results for you.

Starting that research is the first step to helping you alter your mental attitude, a shift that will lead in the change you are really after in the first place: losing weight.

Acai berries and fibre; The gut healthy super food

Thursday, June 4th, 2009
by Jeremy James Liddle

Everyone says to eat more fibre. Easy to say but hard to do? The talk may be everywhere, but why is it so?

A high fibre diet (approximately 30-40g per day) reduces the risk of chronic disease such as diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer. It is also a great way to help feel full quicker and lose weight.

Fibre comes from plant foods: whole grain cereals, vegetables, legumes, fruit, nuts and seeds, and is necessary for the gut to function properly. However, it is important to drink plenty of fluids in order for the fibre to swell and act as a sponge and regulate gut movement.

Fibre soaks up sugar in the foods eaten because it acts like a sponge, releasing is slowly and helping control blood sugar levels. it also reduces cholesterol absorption and excretion, reducing blood cholesterol and risk of heart disease.

Foods that are high in fibre tend to be low in energy, and they also expand in the stomach and intestine like a sponge to help the feeling of being full. These foods are said to have low energy density. If compared to a bag of lollies, there is no fibre in lollies and they are very high in energy, and they don?t act like a sponge and expand in the stomach to help feel full and stop eating.

Acai berries can help bulk up the diet with fibre, and therefore decrease its energy density. This can help prevent weight gain and risk of obesity due to eating less energy for the same weight of food.

Most organic freeze dried acai has a relatively high fibre content of 1.4g (per 5g serve) compared with an apple (1.8g) or a weetbix (1.8g). In an Acai smoothie with 3 scoops of organic freeze dried A?a? powder, there is around 4g of dietary fibre! The new recommended intake for Australia and New Zealand suggest we consume 30g of fibre per day.
