Rachel Rays Acai Berry Show

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

For all those you have internet or a TV, we know Rachel Ray loves Acai. Acai is the new superfood promoted by Rachel Ray, Oprah, Dr. Perricone and Dr. Oz. For those who haven’t heard of it, the acai berry is dark purple or green in color. This berry grows naturally and without cultivation at the crown of fast growing palm trees which dominate the rain forests in the Amazon, particularly in parts of Brazil. Every six months, the local population harvests the berries and uses them to make a fruity pulp which flavors a variety of different foods. In its raw form this berry pulp has a short shelf life and needs to be used quickly. If not used immediately after harvest the pulp needs to be flash-frozen in order to prevent spoilage.

Acai berries are a significant source of anthocyanins which are a particular antioxidant nutrient. This nutrient is the same as that which provides red wine with it’s health benefits. Acai are also a good source protein and fiber. Lastly, acai berries also provide a good quantity of vitamins and omega fatty acids. Acai Berries provide a remarkably powerful combination of many healthy nutritional benefits.

Since being introduced to us by Dr. Perricone, acai has garnered a lot of attention. The internet is now full of acai promotions. Acai Berry ranks among Dr. Perricone’s top ten superfoods. These superfoods if consumed regularly are supposed to make us look significantly more youthful in a short period of time. Acai berry has captured the eye, attention and imagination of many television celebrities. Rachel Ray drinks a type of acai berry juice daily and claims it makes her feel great.

It is commonly known that antioxidants are essential for good health. They help us fight the on-going threat of disease and the deteriorating effects of aging. We are regularly hearing that we should eat more foods rich in antioxidants such as raspberries and blueberries and spinach. Antioxidants have long been recognized as an essential and critical part of a healthy diet.

I think highly of Rachel Ray and her opinions on wellness, drink and food. As a science oriented person myself, I was interested in learning about Rachel Ray and acai berry. As you can imagine, I was thrilled to read that recently a team of researchers decided to investigate just how much antioxidant benefit was actually in commonly available acai juices. Three store bought and readily available acai juice blends containing unspecified and presumably varied concentrations of a?a? juice and/or acai pulp were compared for in vitro antioxidant capacity against other commonly known antioxidants including tea, six types of pure fruit juice, red wine and pomegranate juice. The results are surprising at first glance. The antioxidant capacity of the acai juice blends was approximately equal to that of black cherry or cranberry juice, and was higher than that of apple juice, tea and orange juice. The antioxidant capacity of the acai juice blends was actually ranked poorer than that of Concord grape juice, pomegranate juice, blueberry juice, and red wine. How does this make me feel about Rachel Ray and acai? Acai juice blends are significantly better for you than orange or apple juices, but not as good antioxidant-wise as either red wine or pomegranate juice. Simply put it still means that readily available acai juice blends provide a health benefit.

I have seen these blends and there is no telling whether they are 90% acai or simply apple juice with a splash of acai. The problem with this study is that it uses juices with unspecified quantities of acai. The above experiment was done on commercially available acai berry juices. In fairness to Rachel Ray and acai she promotes a specific type of acai juice which might have a greater concentration of acai.

Weight Loss And Tonalin CLA

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Tonalin CLA supplements are getting some positive reviews these days from a number of reputable sources. I struggle with an extra 10 or 15 pounds and I need some sort of outside help to get me on the right track. In the event that CLA doesn’t work for me then I have lost nothing because there are no known side effects and the cost of a one or two month supply is fairly minimal. It’s enough to get me interested in trying them for a month or two.

I am suitably impressed with what I have read so far on CLA. The two most compelling research reports have come from two well known universities in North America. One university is American and is located in the heartland of Wisconsin. The other university is the University of Guelph and it is located in Ontario. Both of these professionally designed, managed and controlled studies claim that Tonalin CLA can really help overweight people lose weight and maintain their weight loss regimes after they stop dieting.

The Canadian study was conducted first and was based out of the University of Guelph in Ontario. The study was conducted in November and December and was particularly focused on monitoring the potential weight change over the Christmas holidays. It was an eight week study and studied 60 over weight adults. Thirty people took a CLA pill everyday while the other thirty people took a placebo pill. The results were simply remarkable. The CLA group lost weight in the time period leading up to the holidays and didn’t gain any weight over the holidays even when they didn’t exercise and ate loads of holiday treats. The placebo group gained some weight leading up to the holidays and then gained even more weight over the holidays.

Impressed by what they heard out of Canada, a group of researchers from the University of Wisconsin tried to repeat the Canadian results and were entirely successful. The American study used forty overweight adults and they studied them for six months including the 8 weeks used in the Canadian study. The participants in the American study also claimed to have lost fat from their belly region when they took daily a CLA pill. The cardiovascular experts were delighted with this extra result as belly fat can lead to heart disease which is a deadly threat to their patients.

Both the Canadian and American studies made sure that all of the subjects had the same amount of daily exercise. The studies also made sure that all of the participating subjects consumed approximately the same amount of calories per day. By controlling diet and exercise, the scientist could make sure that it was the CLA pill that was responsible for any changes.

I tend to look at the authors of research publications when deciding if the research is credible. In this case professionals at two respectable North American Universities conducted the studies. This means a lot to me. I am going to start taking Tonalin CLA and continue with my regular diet and exercise.

7 Keto

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
by Michal Johnson

The supplement, DHEA, has been a favorite supplement since it has excellent anti-aging properties. It invigorates the heart, the brain and the skin. It enhances a person’s psychological and physical condition, particularly in older persons. However, the good that DHEA does can also be the cause of the bad it can do. DHEA does have negative effects in some cases. The good news is that its main metabolite, 7 Keto, is able to do the things DHEA can do, without the negative effects.

Now, let’s talk about the seven great benefits of 7 Keto.

Improve metabolism. 7 Keto works with the thyroid gland to help it manufacture enzymes that powers up the metabolic processes in our body, including fat burning. This means that whatever dieting or exercise you do, the effects are magnified. You are able to get rid of more fat.

More lost weight. With increased thermogenesis comes increased weight loss. You see, thermogenesis is about the process of converting fat and turning it to heat, and consequently, energy. The body produces enzymes that helps it burn fat. 7 Keto promotes the production of such enzymes and as such, you lose more weight and have increased energy levels.

Push the weight loss plateau further. The hardest pounds to lose are the last few pounds. That’s because the body tries to make up for the weight lost by slowing down the metabolism. This response is reversed when you use 7 Keto. The result is that you continue to lose more fat.

Stronger immune system. With 7 Keto, the immune system produces more antibodies. Thus, your body can prevent infection and speed up recovery from illness and allergic reactions.

Healthier heart. With improved HDL levels, you are less prone to heart disease.

Moisturize the skin. 7 Keto?s anti-aging properties provide you with great looking skin, as it is an effective moisturizer.

Decrease muscle loss. In the process of losing weight, it is inevitable that some of the muscle is also lost. With 7 Keto, the body is more able to concentrate on getting rid of the fat without losing the muscle composition.

Using Food To Relieve Constipation

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
by Jean Johnson

Today there seems to be so much advice given with regard to diet. Eat this, don’t eat that, don’t even think about smelling that! Many foods seem to lead to one result-constipation. If you have experienced this problem know all too well the discomfort and embarrassment this can cause. The number one question may be, which foods would bring relief.

There are quite a few foods that can relieve constipation. Lets take a moment to explore some of these. Two foods that are very high in fiber and thus useful to constipation sufferers are figs and dates. Because of their high mineral and fiber content, these fruits aid the digestion process and may relieve constipation within twenty four hours.

Grape lovers will be happy to note that one or two pounds of their favorite fruit daily can provide them with relief. The fact that grapes are full of vitamins, fiber and minerals may account for this effect. The skin of these beauties also contains an antioxidant called resveratol which only adds to the health benefits of this fruit.

Papaya is another excellent choice in this area. It contains lots of fiber and when ripe is very easily digestible. The protein-digesting enzymes papain and chymopapain are incredibly helpful in creating and maintaining a free flowing system. It is also high in anti-oxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta carotene which produce excellent results in reducing inflammation and improving overall health. Papaya can be used as part of a healthy breakfast, a quick snack or can be added to delicious smoothies.

Persimmons are high in fiber (3.6g per 100g) and minerals like, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. In addition they contain substantial amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C and folate. As a result, this bright orange little fruit stands out from other substances that produce just a laxative effect. Not only does it relieve constipation but the persimmon also revitalizes the body with the nutrients it needs to function at its best. That this fruit enriches any diet is an understatement.

Raspberries make it to this list because of their richness in vitamins A and C. The minerals magnesium, iron and calcium also fortify this dark fruit. This fragile and tasty little fruit can not only make constipation disappear quickly but can also replenish your vitamin reserve.

Dried plums (prunes) are very effective in relieving constipation. Generally prunes are considered to be one of the best ways of relieving constipation. Forty percent of each prune is made up of insoluble fiber which assists the lower intestine in the elimination of waste. This wonderful little food outranks all fruits and vegetables in antioxidant content and contains eighteen powerful body boosting minerals and vitamins. Among these are vitamin E, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin A, zinc, thiamine, sodium, selenium, riboflavin, potassium, phosphorous, pantothenic acid, niacin, manganese, magnesium, iron, copper and calcium. Bite for bite there is no other food that outranks this one. So eat up, enjoy these foods and have a free flowing colon.

Whey Protein Supplements And Their Effects

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
by Julie Poundsign

Milk is around 80% casein and around 20% whey protein. Whey protein is one of the leading dietary supplements for weight loss and muscle growth, and when concentrated, is very effective.

Whey protein, if its pure, will be free of most of the causes of milk allergies, as most of these are contained in the casein that is extracted during the purification process. Whey protein therefore can be a good dietary option for people with these kinds of allergies, however whey isn’t necessarily suitable for people who are completely lactose intolerant.

So we all know that whey protein can provide invaluable assistance when it comes to losing weight or gaining muscle, but is there such a thing as too much whey? Of course there is, but how much is too much? What are the side effects? Well, a lot of doctors would urge caution when using protein supplements because there are some unpleasant side effects, one is particularly not nice.

In fact, one of the most ironic things about whey protein is that your dieting and muscle building can result in you not being able to work out any more at all. If you develop gout, then this could be a risk you face.

Gout is a result of excess protein in your body that the body cant do anything with so it settles on your joints, muscles and tendons in your legs and feet (usually in your big toes first) as crystals of uric acid that cause joints to be stiff, brittle and painful.

Too much protein is also one of the main causes of kidney and liver damage, kidney stones are not uncommon in very high protein diets, but as long as common sense and patience are applied and you don’t go overboard with your supplements, then you should be alright. The right amount to take varies from person to person and the main deciding factor for the right amount to take is body mass. I recommend consulting with your doctor before you start out on supplements as he/she will be able to guide you as to the right amount to use based on your body mass.

So whey protein, we can conclude, is an effective source of protein for your body to lose unwanted fat or gain some lean muscle, but you should always do all the research you can before you start using supplements of any kind to make sure you wont be troubled by unwanted side-effects.

The Desired And Undesired Effects Of Using Whey Protein

Saturday, June 27th, 2009
by Julie Poundsign

Whey Protein comes from milk and makes up around 20% of its protein. The other 80% is called casein which is an ingredient in some other protein supplements. The whey must undergo several isolation processes to separate it from the milk itself.

In fact, one of the most ironic things about whey protein is that your dieting and muscle building can result in you not being able to work out any more at all. If you develop gout, then this could be a risk you face.

People develop gout when there is a build up of excess protein that crystallises itself as uric acid and settles usually in the joints of your big toes to start with, and then as the condition worsens it will spread up your feet and legs until all of the muscles, tendons and joints in them are stiff and painful to the point where you almost cant move them.

So overall, using whey protein is an effective way of shedding unwanted fat, or gaining lean muscle, but its worth doing the research before hand to ensure that you don’t experience any undesired effects.

Tonalin CLA Beats Belly Fat

Will Tonalin CLA Help You Lose Belly Fat?

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009
by Jane Moore

Can Tonalin CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) help you reduce belly fat? The answer is a very encouraging yes. Millions of Americans struggle with their weight. Being overweight causes significant health problems and is damaging to one’s self esteem. Recent studies are giving hope to the idea that a simple natural supplement may give people a boost in their weight loss struggles.

Research done by a Canadian nutritionist, found that overweight adults taking a daily supplement of CLA lost weight prior to the Christmas holidays. The subjects taking CLA supplement also kept the weight off over the holiday season while they were indulged in holiday cakes and cookies and reduced their daily exercise regime.

The remarkable results of this holiday study were repeated by researchers at the University of Wisconsin which is located in Madison, Wisconsin. This second study had a sample size of 40 overweight adults. In this second study researchers gave half of their study subjects a daily supplement of Tonalin CLA while the other half took a placebo pill. The subjects were studied over a period of six months

The researchers controlled the amount of food and exercise each subject had. Accordingly, there were no differences between the control group and the CLA supplement group in this regard. They discovered that the control group or the placebo group had Christmas holiday weight gain that was significantly more than compared to that gained in the pre-holiday period. The researchers found that the group that took the CLA supplement lost weight prior to the Christmas holiday season and maintained their weight over the holidays.

During the pre-holiday period, which for the purposes of this study included November and December, the group taking the CLA supplements lost weight while the control group gained a total of 1.5 pounds of fat mass. As is to be expected, both experimental groups did less physical activity over the holidays. However, the CLA supplement group still managed to reduce their total body fat mass. Over the course of the 6 month study period, the CLA group lost a total of 2.2 pounds of fat. The subjects who took the CLA supplement found that there was also a tendency to lose belly fat. Losing belly fat is great for your health as that is the type of body fat that increase the risk of heart disease. Just over two pounds of fat might not sound like much but this loss was strictly ?fat? and not muscle loss or water loss. The researchers were able to measure the exact ?fat? loss by using highly accurate and sophisticated tools including under-water weighing.

There are a few different types of CLA supplements. Research showed that a mixture of two common forms held the most promise for fat loss. Happily, this mixed form is easy to find. Tonalin CLA is the only easily available and clinically proven form of CLA. It was used in the above described studies.

In determining whether CLA supplements would be an appropriate inclusion in your weight loss program you should speak to your pharmacist. Studies have shown that that there are minimal to no risks associated with mixed-form Conjugated Linoleic Acid or Tonalin CLA supplements.
