Why Man Boobs Is Prevalent In Teens Younger Then 17
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010Why gynecomastia is common in boys younger than 17: The condition of males having abnormally large breasts is referred to as “gynecomastia.” This condition is common in young boys, usually nine through seventeen. It is usually due to hormonal changes and imbalance. In 90% of the cases, the condition disappears on its own. So it is recommended to wait a few years before resorting to surgery.
For some boys, the condition is caused from stress or trauma. It is usually different for each individual, though the majority is caused by the hormonal conditions. It is more common than we think, but not often talked about openly because of the shame. It can be a humiliating topic to discuss. And many young boys may not want to talk about it.
Boys that are overweight naturally have fat all over their body, including the chest area. So having large man boobs looks natural. But in skinnier boys, it looks unnatural. If they are generally skinny but carrying protruding man boobs, the other kids will take notice. He will feel very embarrassed.
Boys of that age are already confused enough. He should not have to worry about having “man boobs” and suffer even more. Other kids can be so cruel. They will make fun of him and shun him. This can do horrific things to a young child. His self image and self esteem will be ruined.
When changing clothes in gym, most boys with this condition will often feel shy and embarrassed about changing in front of others. Often times, he will be the target of ridicule. His true friends will stick by him, but let’s face it, – kids can be very mean. Having man boobs at that age when he is still trying to figure out who he is, can be traumatizing and scar a boy for life.
Losing weight can help shrink the fat around the breast. But sometimes, it does not help. Wait a few years before considering surgery. If the decision to have surgery is made, be sure to have the doctor know of any other medical conditions that are present. When the man boobs disappear, self confidence will be gained.
The hormonal changes are sometimes just part of the puberty cycle. Unimaginable changes go through a young boy’s body during this time. Sometimes it is just a matter of imbalance, which will usually clear up on its own. Wait a few years and it is likely to go away. When speaking to your doctor, be sure to let him/her know of your medical history and the medications (if any) that are taken.
If your boy is going through emotional pain, have him see a counselor. Talking about it always helps. They may be able to provide the emotional support he needs.
