Common Failures of Lap Band

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009
by M Vasquez

Lap Band surgery has been hailed as being one of the easiest ways for a person to lose weight, but truth be told there are definitely some problems with the procedure. While these problems are not exactly endemic or typical of lap band surgeries, they are problems that can cause intense problems for the people that have undergone the surgery and for that reason are failures that people should know about before they actually go ahead and have the surgery done. The two most common failure of lap band would have to be migration errors and erosion errors.

The migration error is an error that takes place when the band that is being used actually ends up moving from one part of the stomach to another. The whole point of the lap band surgery is that when the band is inserted into the body, it can then be used to constrict the stomach and in doing so it can then be used by the person with the band to regulate the amount of food that they take in. However, the band is operating in an area of the body that does not have a large amount of friction and for that reason the natural movements of the human body over time can cause the band to move from one part of the stomach to another or even get dislodged from the stomach entirely in severe cases. This not only completely cancels the effectiveness of the band, but it also means that another operation needs to be scheduled in order for the doctor to go in and replace the band or maybe even remove it entirely if that is what the patient now wants.

The erosion error is an error that has similar results, although for a different reason. Rather than moving out of position or falling off where it is supposed to be, a band that experiences an erosion error actually sees part of the material within the band disappear entirely. This happens because of the friction forces such as they are between the stomach and other parts of the body and the band. When the person moves, the band rubs against these different parts. Over the course of time, the creation of that type of force can create holes in the layering of the band, causing parts of the band to erode away. If the error is particularly bad, these parts can then be absorbed by the body and potentially create some feelings of illness as a result. The erosion error is usually more serious than the migration error because of this possibility.

These are the two main common failures of lap band and of course they are not mutually exclusive events. If a person is particularly unlucky they can experience both errors and be in a very bad state. This is why it is important to know about these errors before you actually agree to have lap band surgery done.

An Absolutely Fantastic Method to Keep Your Kids Slim!

Monday, April 13th, 2009
by Frances Norah Smith

We all know that the only way to keep our kids from getting any fatter is by making them eat healthy fruits and vegetables as well as forcing them to stay away from junk foods. However, any parent knows that it is easier said than done! After all, which kid would want to give up on the tasty junk foods for the sake of fruits and vegetables! Well, good news is that there is a little trick which works wonders in this case! In this article I will talk about that little-known but useful trick!

The trick is that of hiding healthy foods in the guise of ‘comfort’ foods. How about a spinach burger, or a ’soft drink’ made up of just plain water with a tad of sugar and a pint of natural lemon or mango flavor? How about using margarine instead of butter for the purpose of cooking those delicious and yummy popcorn balls? There are plenty of ingenious ways you can use to make your kids eat healthy foods without much fuss!

Now, there are certain things to remember here:

1. First of all, contrary to what many parents believe, there is nothing unethical about tricking your kids into eating healthy foods; the only ‘bad’ thing which is going to happen as a result of this trick is that your child would be more and more addicted to healthy foods and his addiction towards junk foods would automatically diminish over time!

Most of the organic fruits and vegetables out there are rich in fiber, among other nutrients! Therefore these foods help keep your kids full for a long time, and consequently, their appetite for junk foods is killed!

2. Secondly, while it is true that this tehnique only works for young children, it is also true that if you make them accustomed to healthy foods right from their infancy, it would be easier for them to incorporate healthy eating habits later in life, and when that happens, you won’t really need to trick them anymore by offering healthy foods camouflaged as junk foods! Remember that habits, good or bad, are adopted by human beings right from a very young age!

3. Thirdly, in the quest of making our children eat healthy foods, we must not lose sight of the foods they may be allergic too! Milk may be good for the growth of kids, but many kids are lactose intolerant and as such, cannot digest milk properly! The only solution is to offer skimmed or ‘fat-free’ milk instead!

Also there are many kids who are allergic even to the innocuous potatoes! If your kid dislikes potatoes no matter how you cook them, then there is more to it than its bland taste. However if your kid seems to prefer potato chips in place of roasted or steamed potatoes, then it is just an unhealthy food choice which needs to be taken care of. Granted that potatoes are high on carbs, but still, steamed potatoes are lower on calorie content than potato chips; plus your kids need carbs anyway!

2 Tips to Help Your Kids Eliminate Their Fat Bellies!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009
by Frances Norah Smith

People learn only from their peers, and this holds true for adults as well as kids. It is no secret that the level of childhood obesity in the world is increasing alarmingly with every passing year. Even though parents tend to blame their kids’ unhealthy lifestyle habits as the root cause of obesity, the fact remains that if parents are willing, they can change those habits during the growing years of their children.

Bear in mind that a stitch in time saves nine; if you nip these bad habits of your kids in the bud then they would always remain fit and healthy. If you are clueless about what to do in this direction, I will tell offer you two tips on that!

Make no mistake, even though now I am a fitness professional, I too was a big, fat ugly kid hated by my class mates and neighbors alike! Just like your kids I too loved all the tasty and yummy junk foods my parents used to feed me.

My parents believed that I would cry less if they feed me delicious foods all the time; however this didn’t help at all as I cried even after all that ‘pampering’; if anything, I fell prey to unhealthy eating habits for which I had to pay dearly later on.

When I grew up a little, Mac Donalds became my regular destination and their burgers my all-time favorites! To top it all, my parents even took me to a doctor for they thought I was extremely underweight and malnourished, and oddly enough, that doctor only gave reassurance to my parents’ fears!

I don’t even need to tell you the end result of it all; soon I had a fatty belly and a pair of flabby arms which I detested very much (even though my parents seem to have no issues with them).

After keeping up with the taunts of my schoolmates for a while, I thought that enough was enough, and one day took a stand that I would lose weight no matter what!

1. Encourage your kids to idolize professional athletes and bodybuilders: These days, kids usually idolize movie stars and prefer to sit on the couch the entire day and watch movies of their favorite idols. There is nothing wrong with hero worship at all, as long as it helps your kids stay fit and avoid weight gain. Idolizing movie heroes and heroines won’t be of any use to them; on the other hand, idolizing professional sportspersons, body builders and athletes would really help them stay active all the time. While it is true that I got involved in hula hopping because it was a very popular sport among our neighborhood kids, I played tennis mainly because famous tennis players such as Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick were my idols (they still are).

When kids consider athletes to be their heroes, they like to emulate their active lifestyle and have a have a healthy body like them, which in turn means that your kids would start eating healthy and indulging regularly in outdoor games!

2. Dont stop your kids from participating in sports: So when I decided to lose weight, I started spending much more time in my favorite sports than I used to!! Thankfully, unlike the parents of some of my peers, my parents never prohibited me from getting involved in outdoor sports.

Take a cue from this: if you are a parent and wish to keep your kids fit and healthy then keeping them from indulging in sports is just stupid! Far from making your kids sit at home and forcing them to stick their eyes on books throughout the whole day, you should actually encourage them to become active in life, since only active kids are able to keep the fat away for the rest of their lives!

Really, that is the only thing I did, apart from changing my unhealthy eating habits, in order to acquire the fit body that I still maintain! And you thought it was too difficult to help your kids lose weight!

3 Palate Training Tips to Help Your Kids Avoid Weight Gain!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009
by Frances Norah Smith

If you thought your kids have obtained their junk food eating habits from peers, you may not be wholly true! Habits start quite early in the life of a human, and if your kid is taught the benefits of healthy eating right from infancy, they are less likely to indulge in junk food eating out of peer pressure, if at all, than otherwise! A formula which works very well in this case is palate training.

Contrary to its name, this formula is quite simple and straightforward, in that it doesn’t require any expert knowledge on your part! It was invented by two members of the Good Food Village Trust, Louise Rutten and Mitzy Wilson! Palate training is all about training the tastebuds of your kids in such a way that they start loving natural and healthy foods much more than those yummy fast foods! So let’s get right on it as to how to start training the palates of your kids!

1. Let them appreciate natural foods: Your kids would eat organic foods only when they love them! From quite an early age, you should teach your children that beets or carrots don’t taste awful! Conventional preaching doesn’t work too well in case of kids for whom, seeing is believing.

So you could go a bit further, peel off a carrot and allow your kid to lick it with his tongue or chop it off and ask him to put a piece on one side of his mouth and keep it there for a few moments to enjoy the taste. Such small and gradual steps would make your kid addicted to carrots! In fact, you can use this formula for any food you want your kids to eat!

2. Don’t encourage bad habits at home: While it is true that you don’t have absolute control over what your kid eats when he is out of home, you could still control his eating habits in a number of approaches.

An example could be when he goes to school, pack his lunch box with healthy fruits and vegetables. If your kid doesn’t eat it at school, make him eat the same at home. It is still possible that your kid may have a bite of pizza or hamburger at school or a sip of soft drink at a friend’s party! However, they won’t get addicted to them if you don’t allow those foods at home, since a kid needs to eat a particular food at least 14-15 for him to get addicted to it!

3. Walk the talk: It is easy to preach the benefits of healthy eating to your kids but do YOU follow your own advice? Take note that kids have a tendency to emulate the adults, particularly their parents, and if they catch you enjoying a packet of chips on a lazy Saturday evening, why would they be contented with a carrot or cabbage? If you wish to inculcate good eating habits in your kids, you need to adopt them yourself first!

3 Step-by-Step Meal Plans For the Fans of FatLoss4Idiots!

Saturday, April 11th, 2009
by Frances Norah Smith

With due respect to the huge number of articles written on the benefits of calorie shifting, I just wished that the authors of those articles had also taken the time to offer a few easy-go-recipes for the followers of the diet. Regardless, I am going to fill that need with my article! If you have been searching for some good recipes that go well with the concept of calorie shifting, you would be able to find them and more from this article!

For the sake of argument, I am making a few assumptions here, the first of them being that you are quite familiar with the concept of calorie shifting method of dieting. I am also assuming that you are a member of the FatLoss4Idiots diet program, which follows the philosophy of calorie shifting diet. Now if those two assumptions are true, then you are going to benefit tremendously from this article. I will offer you a 3-day meal plan based on the dietary requirements of FatLoss4Idiots.

For your information, these meal plans are only for the non-vegetarians; I cannot mention the vegetarian diet here, as it would mean infringing on the copyright of FatLoss4Idiots. If you require the vegetarian version of these meals, you can access that from within their membership area.

Also, note that you are free to consume these meals in any way and order you wish, the only exception being the meal plan of second day. Furthermore, if you don’t want to eat a particular food suggested in the meal plan, you are free to do that as well. These meal plans are as flexible as they should be, so that you can enjoy your meals and lose weight at the same time!

1. Meal Plan for First day:

Your first day should consist of the following meals:

Meal A-

I) Mixture of vegetables in steamed form: When you are starting the diet, I would recommend that you eat a bowl of steamed vegetables. You can have any number of vegetables you wish in the mix. If however, you choose to eat them fried, make sure you use as little oil as possible; I would also suggest the use of olive oil over your regular fatty oil.

II) Slices of roasted beef and hard boiled eggs: It is important to start building your lean muscle mass right from day one, as more lean muscles means speedier fat burning and a stronger and flatter body! Increasing your protein intake is a great way to build strong muscles, and good news is that both lean beef and eggs are rich in protein content!

Meal B-

Your second meal would consist of eggs, this time in scrambled form. Additionally, you should also consume broiled sea bass.

Meal C-

For the third meal, I suggest sausage links along with cottage cheese.

Meal D-

For the fourth meal, broiled orange roughy along with tuna salad would make a fabulous combo, and if you add a few pears to the mix (in fresh form of course), you cannot help but explain ‘Wow!’

2. Meal Plan for Second day:

You could have the following meals on second day:

Meal A-

For the first meal, you should eat nothing except a deli meat sandwich. To make this sandwich, you should only use the following ingredients:

-Any kind of meat that fits the deli style, such as ham, turkey, roasted beef, etc.

-2 Medium-sized sandwich breads

-Optionally, you can also add onions, tomatoes and lettuce to the mix

Meal B to D-

Your next three meals should consist of nothing but fruits. You are however free to choose any fruits from the following: peaches, pears, plums, oranges, strawberries, grapes, grapefruit, apples, kiwis, etc.

3. Meal Plan for Third day:

If you are bored of the fruit-only meals of the previous day, the meals of the third are as delicious as they could be!

Meal A-

You can start your day off with shrimps (one of my favorite foods by the way) as well as Pastrami in sliced form.

Meal B-

For the second meal, nothing could be better than having lean chicken meat. Along with chicken, you should also have the macadamia nuts, as they are high in unsaturated fats!

Meal C-

Did I say that the third day has some interesting foods in store for you! For your third meals, you can have both cheese and turkey, although in sliced form. Along with that you can also have banana milk shake (trust me, it tastes fantastic!).

Meal D-

With this fourth meal, you would be back to square one. Remember that when you started dieting I recommended hard-boiled eggs and slices of roasted beef for your first meal! Well, you can have them again for this fourth meal. That completes the dieting cycle!

Even the best laid out meal plans could appear to be boring after sometime, which is why I highly recommend that you use the diet generator software that comes free with your FatLoss4Idiots membership! This tool would generate awesome meal plans based on your food choices.

A diet program that lets you eat what YOU want- can anything be better than that!

Top 4 Simple Walking Tips To Melt Your Fat Away!

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
by Frances Norah Smith

Who of us won’t love to have all of that stubborn fat melt away fast and easily? But if only it could happen! The fact remains that while you can burn sugar and calories really fast, the same cannot be said of fat, even though it is formed from calories and sugar!

That said, there are still simple ways to burn fat and lose weight, and when I mean ’simple’, I obviously don’t refer either to starving for several days on end or doing long boring cardios for hours! Believe it or not, if you are prepared to walk everyday, you cannot but get rid of fat!

Many would argue that it would take several years for an overweight person to lose fat solely with the help of walking, in sharp contrast to intense workouts such as interval training. That might be true, but then again, how many of us have the stamina to bear the strain of intense workouts! The answer is, very few.

If you have never worked out in life, it is silly to even imagine that you would be able to manage those hard workouts with ease. On the contrary, walking is easy to do and it is not true that you cannot burn fat with it! You just need to be steady and patient and never lose heart. Here are a few walking tips for you to help you gain the maximum mileage from this exercise.

1. It is very important that you wear the correct shoes while walking, or you would be in danger of injuring your feet badly! I would recommend a pair of decent tennis shoes for this purpose, and you can buy them from your local store at an affordable price! With tennis shoes, the sole of your foot rests comfortably, thereby making walking easier for you with no fear of injuries!

2. We often set fixed schedules for almost all the important activities of our life except that of looking after our health. This is a rather weird behavior as a one’s health comes before even his most important activity! It is easy for you to forget about your daily walking routine if you don’t schedule it like your other important tasks. Make walking your top priority, because it really IS!

3. To shed even more fat from this exercise, you can carry one pound of weight in each of your hands. While walking, you can raise your arms over your head and then gently let them fall on the side. As you repeat this exercise while walking, it would make your heart beat faster and consequently you would be burning more fat!

If you want to carry the weight in your legs instead of hands, you can buy leg weights instead! They are available for varying amounts of weights, and are quite cheap too! You can get them for as low as $5 or $6, depending on the amount of weight you are buying!

4. If you feel a bit impatient, you can add half-an-hour of extra intense workout along with your regular walking schedule. The reason I left this tip for the last is that you should do it only when you are fully comfortable with walking. This can tremendously accelerate the weight loss process for you and you would be able to get rid of those annoying pounds quicker than you would with just plain walking!

Best 3 Simple Food Tips to Burn Fat Rapidly!

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
by Frances Norah Smith

Some people wrongly believe that food is the culprit behind their weight gain. To be honest, this is just another misconception. Just as a tool can be used both in right and wrong ways, the same can be said about food. Assuming that food is a ‘tool’, if you use it wrongly you would gain weight for sure, but it is possible to use that same ‘tool’ for the purpose of losing weight, provided that you learn to use it right! In this article I will tell you how to use food in order to shed unwanted pounds from your belly!

1. Snacking ain’t bad, but check your snacks closely: If you thought that snacking in between meals is not favorable for weight loss, you couldn’t be further from the truth! In fact, experts actually recommend snacking in-between meals as it is a good way to keep yourself full at all times! If you are hungry, you will tend to gorge on junk and fatty foods than otherwise.

However, you need to make sure that the snacks you are eating are not unhealthy. It is easy to see the difference between a carrot or an apple and a packet of chips; the former is healthy and the latter is not! While chips would add more unwanted pounds to your body, apple would help you burn those fat deposits! Now you know which snacks to go for and which ones to avoid, right?

2. Choose the right fats: Fat is not all bad, as some think. Cutting down extremely on your fat intake may affect your health negatively, while on the other hand consuming fat in the form of junk and fatty foods would make you overweight.

As a matter of fact, there are two types of fats out there: the saturated or ‘bad’ fat and the unsaturated or ‘good’ fat. Saturated fats are available in plenty in junk foods, and they do nothing except expanding your body in inches and pounds! On the other hand, unsaturated fats found in canola and olive oils keep your body healthy!

Needless to say, you should go for unsaturated fats over the saturated ones; unsaturated fats can also be found in fishes such as salmon and tuna.

3. Pick protein over sugar: Do you eat sugary foods simply to become more energetic? Here is the real truth about sugar: while it provides you a sudden outburst of energy, that energy lasts only for a temporary period, after which you feel fatigued and hungry all over again. What follows next is gorging on more sugar-rich foods like a hungry wolf.

And the fun part is that the more sugary foods you eat, the hungrier you feel! And do you know what does sugar do once it is absorbed into your body? It immediately converts itself first into glucose and then fat!

Here is a better and healthier way to gain the same amount of energy: eat protein-rich foods. Protein would help you burn fat by building muscles, and the more fat you lose, the more energetic you become! Foods such as lean chicken meat and eggs are rich in protein; I usually have eggs for breakfast and chicken for dinner!

Special Fasting Formula Helps You Lose Weight Effortlessly!

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
by Frances Norah Smith

For years experts have taught us that fasting is bad for weight loss, because fasting takes our body into the ’starvation mode’ and when our body goes in starvation mode, it slows down the fat burning process by lowering our metabolic rate.

While it is true that long periods of fasting do more bad than good to our body, a recent study has found out that people who went on intermittent fasting were not only successful in losing weight but also in improving their overall health! If that sounds too good to be true, read this article to find out exactly how intermittent fasting could help you get rid of fat!

When the results of this study came out, it fuelled a lot of controversy and head turning. At first many people thought that this is just another fad diet which would make people unhealthier. However, further research has proven that the intermittent fasting diet not only makes us stress-free but also keeps our body away from harmful maladies by improving our immune system. It was also found out that people who followed this diet to lose weight tended to live longer than others. But there is more to be said about it!

The kind of fasting you do under this diet is a far cry from the crash dieting method many of us are familiar with. With crash dieting, you would be virtually starving for days on end, living off merely on a bite of carrot or a glass of fruit juice. With the intermittent fasting diet, you get to eat to your heart’s content for one day (I mean, you can eat whatever you like), and then starve the very next day, consuming nothing except plain water!

As you can see, the fasting conditions set by this diet program are so lenient that I am sure anyone would have success with it! I don’t know about you, but if someone lets me eat all of my favorite junk foods on the condition that I have to fast on the next day, I would gladly take up on the offer!

It is a fact that our body is actually made to follow this eating routine right from the primitive age. In primitive times, when the staple food for humans was hunted animals, the availability of food was quite unpredictable. On one day, you might be able to hunt down a large animal and have your fill; but if you were unable to hunt another animal on the next day, you would have nothing to eat on that day! Back then, food supply used to be scarce and as such, eating full on one day and going hungry on the next was the norm! Now, when those people used to fast, their bodies would use the stored fat inside for sustaining itself.

This explains why your body helps you lose weight when you fast intermittently!

Is The Ketogenic Diet Just Another Fad?

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
by Frances Norah Smith

New diet programs seem to crop up almost every month, so much so that at times I find it difficult to remember all of them. A new kid on the block is the Ketogenic Diet. You may or may not have heard of it because it hasn’t been able to reach the popularity levels of Atkins Diet or South Beach diet. Even so, weight loss has little to do with the popularity of a particular diet program.

In my experience I have found that people have lost weight with little known diet programs, and the opposite has also happened – that of people getting disappointed with the most popular diet program! The big question is: is the Ketogenic Diet just another fad or does it really work? That is what I would be exploring in detail in this article!

To understand the Ketogenic Diet, you are required to know about ketones first, since this diet is based on how ketones function in our body. In short, ketones are the enemies of fats, and the more ketones your body has, the quicker you would be able to shed the extra pounds!

Now, in fact, our body has a soft corner for fat. It would rather burn your valuable muscles for the purpose of producing energy than that ugly fat. The Ketogenic Diet burns your fat deposits and produces the readymade energy your body can use. This is a win-win situation for you: neither you would need your body’s help to burn fat as it is done artificially by the Ketogenic Diet, nor would you lose your lean muscles!

Now the important part: which foods are you allowed to eat under this diet? Since carbs turn into fat and make you overweight, you should reduce their intake and increase the consumption of fatty foods. This means that you should be eating more of dairy products such as butter, milk, cheese, etc., and less of cookies, cakes, biscuits, chocolates, white breads, rice, pasta, fruits, etc.

The disadvantage of this diet program is that just like other fad diets, this one too is not without its share of side effects. Some side effects you may suffer from as a result of using this high-fat-and-low-carb diet are abnormal behavioral changes, stomach problems such as bloating and constipation, kidney troubles, as well as high cholesterol levels! On top of that, there is no scientific or clinical evidence of the effectiveness of this diet with regards to weight loss. So far, only epileptic patients, that too mainly children, have benefited from the use of this diet. If you decide to opt for this diet, you shouldn’t do so without consulting a doctor or nutritionist!
